Red Light Safety Program Information
IMPORTANT RED LIGHT SAFETY PROGRAM INFORMATION
(Please click the links below for more information)
In an effort to reduce red-light running, Royal Palm Beach will be installing red-light enforcement cameras at the intersections of Royal Palm Beach Blvd. at Okeecobee Blvd. and Royal Palm Beach Blvd. at Crestwood Blvd. The safety cameras started taking photos of red-light violators on November 8, 2009.  The warning period is still in effect at both intersections.

An automated red-light camera program will reduce the number of red-light collisions and injuries associated with these crashes. “The purpose of this program is to increase traffic safety in Royal Palm Beach by reducing red-light running violations, crashes, and injuries,” said David Farber, Village Manager. “The ultimate goal of the safety enforcement program is to change driver behavior by increasing driver awareness and discouraging dangerous driving and red-light running.”

How the Photo-Enforcement Cameras Work
Cameras operate 24-hours a day and capture still images and video of every vehicle running a red-light at the intersection. The safety cameras only photograph a vehicle if it enters the intersection after the light has turned red. A second photograph is taken as the vehicle progresses through the intersection.

Vehicles that enter an intersection on a yellow light are not photographed even if they are still in the intersection when the light changes to red. The technology is designed to record motorists as they intentionally enter an intersection after the signal turns red.

The camera photographs the vehicle from the rear - not the driver. The camera records the date, time, lane number, location and speed of the vehicle. This information is included on the notice of violation and is then evaluated by the Police Department to verify that a violation has occurred and to determine whether a notice should be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The Village of Royal Palm Beach takes red-light running very seriously.  First time offenders will be fined $125, second time violators $250 and any subsequent violations $500.
